Drug development & resistance

Even to stand still against malaria, we need constantly to develop new drugs; the parasite is highly effective at evolving resistance to drugs, which then spreads, leading to a dangerous fall in the effectiveness of treatment.
To advance we need new drug classes against new targets. Members of the Malaria Centre are involved in mapping the spread of drug resistance in Africa and Asia, understanding the reasons for it and the development of new drugs against P falciparum and P vivax malaria. Whilst most of this work is undertaken in support of malaria-endemic countries, members of the Malaria Centre also collaborate with colleagues in the NHS to understand drug resistance in travellers presenting with malaria in UK hospitals.
