OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The objective of the Global Malaria Programme (GMP) is to support Member States to adopt WHO's malaria-related technical recommendations, and to advance implementation of the new Global Technical Strategy for Malaria 2016-2030. The Programme's core roles are to: 1) Address key malaria control and elimination strategic questions; 2) Set, communicate & disseminate evidence-based normative guidance, policy advice and implementation guidance to support country action; 3) Coordinate WHO capacity building & technical support to Member States, jointly with Regions, ISTs and Countries; 4) Help countries develop and implement robust surveillance systems to generate quality data and use those data to achieve greater impact; 5) Keep an independent score of global progress in malaria control and elimination, including drug & Insecticide resistance.


DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

In collaboration with the team lead ELI and other team members, the Epidemiologist will:1) Assist in implementing and supporting global elimination initiatives, including managing forums, organizing work groups, and supporting technical expert and evidence review groups.2) Provide technical input and support to regions and eliminating countries in the assessment of the status, quality and impact of elimination activities.3) Provide technical support to eliminating countries experiencing outbreaks or resurgence in transmission to analyze the situation and develop a response plan.4) Contribute to the development of WHO guidance to countries on malaria elimination and outbreak support through participation in the generation, analysis, synthesis and review of evidence, and writing technical reports, guidance documents and journal articles.5) Support regions and eliminating countries to develop standard operating procedures for key elimination activities and participate in ensuring the capacity of regional and eliminating countries to implement high-quality activities. 6) Build and maintain relationships with counterparts at HQ, regional and country offices, development partners and others for implementation and exchange of information to support epidemiological analysis on malaria elimination.7) Actively participate in technical discussions and contribute towards the advancement of malaria elimination programme planning, monitoring and evaluation with key global and regional partners.8) Provide technical input to one or more of the other technical units in the Department to provide an elimination focus in key technical areas.
