Abstract

ACTwatch is a multi-country research project designed to provide timely, relevant, and high quality antimalarial market evidence. Launched in 2008 with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the project is currently implemented in 13 countries with additional funding from UNITAID and DFID. Standardized tools and approaches are employed to provide comparable data across countries and over time with a focus on malaria medicine and diagnostic availability, price, and market share for the public and private sector. Project achievements include the implementation of over 40 national-level outlet surveys, a number of peer reviewed publications, and a repository of information about antimalarial medicines and rapid diagnostic tests available in project countries. ACTwatch outlet survey methods and data were used in the evaluation of the Affordable Medicines Facility – malaria (AMFm) pilot led by LSHTM and ICF International, and project data have been used by national programs and their partners to inform strategies and policies to improve malaria case management. Please see the project website for more information: www.actwatch.info. This talk will provide an overview of ACTwatch outlet survey methods and a presentation of trends in malaria testing and treatment availability, price, and market share in project countries from 2009-2015.
